Behind the Build: The Construction of Tilt-Up

At Kozeny-Wagner, we take pride in delivering efficient, high-quality solutions tailored to each client’s unique needs. For one of our latest local projects, we’re leveraging a method that combines speed, strength, and cost-effectiveness: tilt-up construction.

What Is Tilt-Up?

Tilt-up construction involves casting concrete wall panels horizontally on site and then lifting them into place with a crane. Once the panels are secured vertically, they form the structural walls of the building. It’s a streamlined process that can save time and reduce material handling, especially for large, low-rise buildings.

The Project

For this local build, we’re partnering with Fenix Construction, our trusted subcontractor specializing in tilt-up concrete work. Their expertise has been essential in ensuring a smooth process from prep to pour to panel lift.

Once the foundation and slab were complete, Fenix got to work forming and pouring each concrete panel on-site. Each panel was carefully engineered and reinforced, with embedded hardware placed precisely for future connections. After curing, the exciting part began—the tilt.

Using a crane, panels were lifted into place one by one. This moment always draws attention—it’s the dramatic transformation from flatwork to framework, and it never gets old.

Why Tilt-Up?

For our client, tilt-up offered:

  • Speed: On-site casting reduces lead times.
  • Durability: Solid concrete walls provide excellent longevity and protection.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: Fewer materials and less labor than traditional methods.
  • Design Flexibility: Panels can be customized with finishes, reveals, or embedded materials to meet aesthetic goals.

Building with Confidence

The success of a tilt-up project depends on collaboration, planning, and precision. With Fenix’s craftsmanship and our project team’s coordination, we’re proud of the progress—and the value this method is bringing to our client.
