Behind the Build – A New Perspective with Drone Technology
Seeing Construction from a New Angle
Construction is often experienced from the ground level—boots on the jobsite, eyes on the details, and hands on the work. But today, technology is giving us a whole new perspective.
At Kozeny-Wagner, we’re taking our projects to new heights—literally—with the use of drone technology. From capturing progress in real time to enhancing quality control and storytelling, drones are changing how we see and share our work.
And leading the charge is our newly FAA-certified drone pilot, Brian Sturholdt.
Why Drone Technology Matters
Drone footage isn’t just about great visuals (though it definitely delivers those). It’s a powerful tool that brings value to every phase of a project.
With aerial capabilities, our team can:
- Track project progress from start to finish
- Capture QA/QC documentation with a comprehensive site view
- Improve communication with clients and stakeholders
- Enhance safety by reducing the need for difficult site access
- Create compelling marketing visuals that showcase our work
With the addition of our new DJI Air 3S drone equipped with a 4K camera, we’re able to document projects with clarity and precision like never before.
Projects from Above
Here’s a look at how drone technology is already making an impact across our jobsites:
MoDOT Project at Conway & Ladue
Phase: Final stages – nearing completion
Drone Perspective: Capturing the final bridge pour from above
Insight: This aerial view highlights the scale and coordination required to complete a major milestone as the project wraps up
Phase: Active construction
Drone Perspective: Timelapse of a concrete pour
Insight: The overhead timelapse provides a clear view of workflow, sequencing, and efficiency throughout the pour
Unger Park – Great Rivers Greenway (Fenton, MO)
Phase: Pre-construction
Drone Perspective: “Before” footage across multiple areas of the park
Insight: Establishing a visual baseline that will allow us to tell a powerful transformation story as construction begins in 2026
Meet the Pilot: Brian Sturholdt
Behind the controls is Brian Sturholdt, Project Engineer in our civil division and now an officially licensed drone pilot through the FAA.
Brian’s journey with Kozeny-Wagner started in 2022 as an intern, and after joining the team full-time over a year ago, he’s continued to expand his skillset in meaningful ways. His latest achievement adds a new layer of capability not only to his role—but to our entire team.
With Brian now certified, Kozeny-Wagner is also covered under our general liability insurance policy for drone operations, allowing us to safely and confidently integrate drone technology into our projects.
When he’s not on the jobsite or piloting the drone, Brian is an avid hunter and outdoorsman—making him right at home behind the controls. And if the last name sounds familiar, it should—his dad, Tim, is also part of the Kozeny-Wagner team.
Looking Ahead
Drone technology is just one more way we’re continuing to evolve, improve, and deliver for our clients.
From capturing key milestones to telling the full story of a project from start to finish, the sky is no longer the limit—it’s just the beginning.
